Science City Park (Akash) is the largest science park in the Indian subcontinent. This park is famous among the people of Kolkata as well as tourists visiting Kolkata. The motive of this science park is to teach people science-related topics in a fun way. This place consists of a variety of facilities. It is almost impossible to explore the entire science city in one day. People can visit this place every day after 9 am and before 8 pm. The main attractions of this place are-
Earth Exploration Hall: a two-storied semi-circular gallery that accommodates an enduring display on Earth.
Science Exploration Hall: this hall is a 5400 square meters new building that provides the latest infrastructure and inquiry-based learning comprising four sections.
Dynamotion Hall: this hall is a giant spiral building gallery that exhibits a surfeit of interactive physical science topics.
Space Odyssey: this section has Space Theatre, Space Science, a Time Machine, a Spinning Platform, Mirror Magic, 3D theatre, a Van-de-Graaff generator, a variety of presentations on Space Science, and an interactive multimedia kiosk on Solar Systems.
Outdoor Science Park: this part comprises Caterpillar Ride, Gravity Coaster, Musical Fountain, Road Train, Cable Cars, Monorail Cycle, butterfly nursery, several exhibitions on physical sciences and life sciences, and a maze set up in a lush green ambiance.
The History of Science City
Science City Park (Akash), or Science City Kolkata, located at the crossing of the EM Bypass and the JBS Halder Avenue in Kolkata, was opened on 1st July 1997 by the prime minister of that time, Indar Kr Gujral, with the motive of helping people learn and explore science in a fun way. It comes under the management of the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India. Once, the 50-acre land of this science park used to be a garbage dumping area. Science city comprises two complexes, the science centre complex, and the convention centre complex. The convention centre complex was inaugurated first on 21st December 1996, and later on 1st July 1997, they inaugurated the entire centre.
