The History of Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden

Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden, also known as Calcutta Botanic Garden, was established in 1786 by British military officer and botanist Colonel Robert Kyd. The garden was initially created as an experimental area to study plants and their cultivation. Over time, it grew into one of the world's most extensive and remarkable botanical gardens. In the early 19th century, the British East India Company took over the garden, and it became a centre for botanical research and experimentation.

The garden was expanded, and new plant species were added to its collection, including rare and exotic plants from around the world. In the 20th century, the garden was renamed in honour of the famous Indian scientist and botanist Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose, who made significant contributions to the study of plants and their physiology. The garden remains a leading centre for botanical research, conservation and education and attracts visitors worldwide.
