Amazing Facts about Alipore Zoo - "Get up close and personal with wildlife in Kolkata"

The Alipore Zoo, a renowned zoological park in Kolkata, India, has been operating since 1876 and spans 46.5 acres of land, making it one of India's oldest zoos. The zoo houses various animals such as mammals, birds, reptiles, and fishes, including some notable species such as Royal Bengal tigers, Indian elephants, Asiatic lions, Indian rhinoceroses, giraffes, zebras, and primates.

The park features a botanical garden showcasing plant species from India and other regions of the world. The zoo offers educational programs and awareness campaigns regarding wildlife conservation and preservation. A popular tourist attraction, it draws many visitors, particularly during weekends and holidays. Nevertheless, the zoo has faced criticisms over animal welfare and living conditions. Recent efforts have been made to enhance the zoo's infrastructure and care for its animal inhabitants.

The History of Alipore Zoo

The inception of the Alipore Zoological Garden took place in 1875, when Lord Northbrook, the Governor General of India, proposed the creation of a zoological garden in Kolkata. In 1876, the zoo opened its doors to the public, becoming one of the oldest in India. Initially, the zoo featured a small assortment of animals like spotted deer, monkeys, and birds. However, the zoo has since expanded in size and popularity, currently accommodating over 126 species of animals and birds.

Over the years, the Alipore Zoo has played an essential role in conserving endangered species, such as successfully breeding Royal Bengal tigers in captivity in the early 1900s. Other endangered species that the zoo has engaged in breeding programs for include the Indian one-horned rhinoceros and the gharial crocodile. Despite encountering several obstacles, the Alipore Zoo remains a prominent institution in India's efforts towards wildlife conservation.
