The History of Darjeeling

Darjeeling's rich and intriguing history dates back to the early 19th century. Initially, in the early 1800s, the British East India Company established Darjeeling as a sanatorium for British troops and officials to escape the oppressive heat and humidity of the plains. The city gradually became a popular retreat for wealthy British individuals who built summer homes and cottages.

The British also introduced tea plantations to the area, which soon became a significant component of the local economy. During the Indian independence movement, Darjeeling was a focal point for political activities, and several prominent leaders, including Mahatma Gandhi and Subhash Chandra Bose, visited the city. Following India's independence in 1947, Darjeeling became a part of the newly formed state of West Bengal.
