The History of Digha

In 1923, a British businessman, John Frank Snaith, established the New Digha Beach Resort and introduced recreational activities such as swimming, boating, and fishing.
In the 1950s and 1960s, Digha became a popular destination for middle-class Bengali families due to its new cottages, bungalows, and hotels along the beach. The government of West Bengal joined in promoting Digha as a tourist destination, and in 1974, the town was declared a marine sanctuary.
Digha has undergone significant development and modernization, including widening and extending the beach and constructing high-rise hotels and resorts. The government has also built tourist attractions like the Science Centre, the Amravati Park, and the Udaypur Sea Beach.
