The oldest and second-largest stadium in India is Eden Gardens, based on its seating capacity. Moreover, it is ranked as the third-largest stadium worldwide. There is a saying that Eden Garden is "cricket's answer to the Colosseum." It is also known as the home of Indian Cricket. The current capacity of this stadium is 68,000. The Cricket Association of Bengal operates this stadium, and the Eastern Command of the Indian Army is the owner of this stadium. This stadium is the home ground for the Bengal Cricket Team and the IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders. Besides, it is a venue for many T20, Test, and One Day matches. Eden Garden was established in 1864.

The History of Eden Gardens

Eden Gardens was established in 1864. The blueprint of this stadium was made in the year 1841. At first, the name of this stadium was 'Auckland Circus Gardens.' However, in 1841 the name was changed to Eden Gardens. Babu Rajchandra Das, the landlord of the land of this stadium, gifted this land to that time governor-general Lord Auckland and his sister as a gesture of paying gratitude for saving his third daughter from a deadly disease. Before the formation of this stadium, Calcutta Cricket Club used to play in this land. On 5th January 1954, this stadium held a Test match for the first time. The First One-Day International Cricket Tournament of this stadium was on 18th February 1987. The Final of the 1987 World Cup was also held in this stadium.
