The History of Elliot Park

Initially, Elliot Park was called 'Maidan Park' and was used as a military ground by the British East India Company. Later, it was renamed 'Jagannath Shankarshet Park' after a renowned philanthropist who donated funds for its development. In 1903, the park was renamed Elliot Park in honour of Sir Charles Elliot, a British administrator who served as the Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal. The park was redesigned and redeveloped in the early 20th century, including a musical fountain, a lake, and a children's play area.

The museum was established in 1961, on the centenary of Tagore's birth, and showcases various personal belongings, manuscripts, and artworks of the legendary writer. Today, the Park is a popular destination for locals and tourists, offering a peaceful retreat in the heart of the city, along with the rich historical and cultural significance of the Tagore Museum.
