Since olden history, the Howrah Bridge has served as the symbol of Kolkata tourism and the face of the City of Joy. It is the world's sixth-longest suspended span cantilever bridge and one of Bengal's first engineering and architectural marvels.
The 705-meter-long bridge, which has 8 lanes that are 97 meters wide, is the busiest cantilever bridge in the world since it is the entrance to 200,000 vehicles and 150,000 pedestrians daily.
The bridge deck is hung from 39 pairs of hangers that are suspended from the main trusses. The bridge needed 20,000 tons of steel in total, of which only 3,000 tons came from England and the other 23,000 tons of high-tension steel were ordered from Tata Steel under the name TISCROM.

The History of Howrah Bridge

With no pillars sustaining its suspension over the Hooghly River for the past 76 years. Moreover, Howrah Bridge has endured many historical events, including World War II. It connects Kolkata and Howrah and is a symbol of Bengal's past and present. Anyone entering Kolkata must cross this bridge in order to access other parts of the state because it serves as the city's entrance and it's an important destination for Kolkata Tourism.
