The History of Indian Museum

Indian Museum was opened in 1875, but there is a massive history behind the formation of this museum. The Asiatic Society of Bengal founded the Indian Museum, commonly referred to as the Imperial Museum. Sir William Jones founded the Asiatic Society in 1784. The Asiatic Society's motive was to bring development in learning and preserve the culture. In 1796 the concept of a museum arose among the members of the society. In 1814, a Danish botanist named Nathaniel Wallich wrote the organization about opening a museum saying he would donate his collections for it. After the museum was formed, he volunteered there as a curator. After Sir Wallich, many individual collectors donated their collections to the museum. Moreover Babu Ramkamal Sen, Begum Sambroo, Dr. Tytler, and Gen Mackenzie are some famous collectors who donated their collections.
