The History of Iskcon Kolkata

Iskcon Kolkata was established in 1970 by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). The temple was inaugurated on Lord Krishna's birthday, the auspicious day of Janmashtami. Initially, the temple was located in a small rented house in South Kolkata, but due to the number of devotees, a new temple complex was built in the city's heart in 1994.

The temple was built on land donated by the government and was designed by the famous architect Nimai Halder. Over the years, the temple has become the spiritual centre of Kolkata, attracting devotees and visitors from all over the world. The temple played a central role in spreading the teachings of Lord Krishna and the Bhagavad Gita in the city and was also involved in various welfare programs, including free food distribution and education.
