James Princep Ghat, also known as Princep Ghat, is a must-visit place for tourists and people who love traveling and exploring new places. The main attraction of this Ghat is the Palladian porch monument of James Princep. Another prime attraction of this place is the Vidyasagar Bridge (commonly known as the Vidyasagar Setu) which links Kolkata and Howrah. A beautiful garden covers the premises of this Ghat. The Ghat was established in 1841 on the bank of the Hooghly River. The sunset view of this place is impeccable. In the evening, you can also book a private boat, have a great time, and feel in the heart of the Hooghly River (in Bengali, they call it "Nouko Bihar," Nouko meaning Boat and Bihar means promenade.)
The History of Prinsep Ghat
Princep Ghat was established in 1841 in memory of James Princep. James Princep came to India in 1819. In 1829 he joined the Asiatic Society of Bengal as secretary and the Calcutta Mint as the Assay Master. He has done many great works for India. After his demise with a 1200 rupees tax collection from residents of Kolkata, this beautiful monument was inaugurated in his memory on the east side of the Hooghly River. W. Fitzgerald designed the Palladian porch. During the period of the British Raj, British royal personas used to use and visit this Ghat while visiting Kolkata. The Palladian porch monument features numerous Greek and Gothic Carvings. In 2001 it was restored and is well maintained till now.
