The History of Jorasanko Thakurbari
Jorasanko Thakurbari was initially built as a small house by Prince Dwarkanath Tagore, grandfather of Rabindranath Tagore, in the 18th century in Kolkata. Over the years, the house was developed and renovated several times by succeeding generations of the Tagore family. Rabindranath Tagore was born on May 7, 1861, in this mansion. He spent much of his childhood here and received his early education.
The villa also served as a hub of cultural and literary activities in Bengal, with Rabindranath Tagore's father, Debendranath Tagore, a prominent figure in the Brahmo Samaj, a social and religious reform movement. After the death of Rabindranath Tagore in 1941, the mansion fell into disrepair. In 1961, the Government of West Bengal acquired the property and converted it into a museum.
