The History of Kumartuli

Kumartuli is a traditional potters' quarter in Kolkata with a rich history dating back to the 18th century. The area was initially settled by a group of potters who migrated to Kolkata from Krishnanagar in the Nadia district of West Bengal. The potters of Kumartuli were initially engaged in making clay pots and other household items.

However, in the 19th century, they began creating clay idols of Hindu gods and goddesses for various religious festivals, gradually becoming their work's primary focus. Over time, the artisans of Kumartuli developed unique techniques for creating these intricate idols. The area has since become a hub of creativity and culture, attracting artists and artisans from all over India.
