Amazing Facts about Raj Bhavan - "A Stately Residence"

Raj Bhavan Kolkata is the official residence of the Governor of West Bengal, located in the heart of the city on the banks of the Hooghly River. It was initially built in the 19th century as the residence of the British Governor-General of India. Later it was converted into the property of the Governor of West Bengal after the independence of India. Raj Bhavan Kolkata is an impressive building spread over 84 acres surrounded by lush gardens and trees.

The building is a mixture of architectural styles, including Gothic, Baroque and Romanesque, and is decorated with several marble statues and sculptures. It is open to the public on certain days, and visitors can explore the beautiful gardens and view the historic building from outside. The building also houses a museum that exhibits the history of the Raj Bhavan and its role in India's colonial past.

The History of Raj Bhavan

Raj Bhavan Kolkata was built initially in 1803 as the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal; Captain Charles Wyatt, a prominent British architect, designed the building. After the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the British government decided to move the capital of India from Calcutta to Delhi. The building was handed over to the Viceroy of India, who made it his official residence. In 1912, when the capital of India was moved back to Calcutta, the building again became the official residence of the Governor of Bengal.

Raj Bhavan Kolkata has played an integral role in Indian history, being the venue for several important meetings and events, including the swearing-in of the first Governor-General of India, C. Rajagopalachari, and the transfer of power from the British to the Government of India in 1947.
